Nigerian Catholic priest, Rev. Duru introducing his group |
Dr Joe Akabuike has today, August 14, hosted a group of
representatives of an Italian NGO named Opera Don Bonifacio Azione Verde (GREEN
ACTION) who came to Anambra state to offer free medical services to Anambrarians. Introducing
the NGO, the leader of the group, Rev. Fr Boniface Duru said that the
organization is an Italian NGO that offers free services to different countries. He said that it was the first time they were coming to Anambra
state though they had been coming to Nigeria for the past 14 years. Their
activities, he revealed, had been in Imo state for the past 13 years where they
are now building a University of Science and Information Technology and have
given more than 500 children scholarships. He observed that the productivity of
every society is dependent upon their health and that because of the good works
of the Obiano’s administration, they have chosen to come to Anambra this time
so as to be part of his good works. He expressed appreciation for the warm welcome
they had been receiving from the government since their arrival and said they
would be in Anambra till Friday next week offering free medical services and drugs
wherever the commissioner deems fit.
Responding during the short welcome ceremony held in his office
at the Health Commission’s Secretariat, Awka, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr Akabuike expressed his
happiness for the visit of the NGO and assured the group that Anambra state is very safe, courtesy of the Willie Obiano Administration. He said that the
Obiano Administration has in its agenda 4 pillars which are Oil and Gas, Trade
and commerce, Industrialization and Agriculture and also what he referred to as
enablers that include Health, Education, Security, Environment, amongst many
others. ‘To achieve these agenda, we need integration and cooperation of
individuals and cooperate bodies,’ Dr Akabuike revealed. He then directed that
to ensure equity in the humanitarian operation of the NGO, their activities
will be divided equally in strategic parts of the various senatorial zones and
shall therefore be in General Hospitals in Nanka, Ogidi, and Aguleri.
Group photographs were taken afterwards and the group which
included teachers, medical experts and social workers, all of Italian origin
were led to the various spots from where they would render their services.
