The Anambra state commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Commander Momodu Sule, has decried the utter neglect of law enforcement agencies, especially the NDLEA, by the federal government. He shared his handicap during the courtesy call paid by Anambra Online Publishers at the Awka Capital city office on Friday, July 31, 2005. Commandant Momodu revealed that besides payment of the salaries of the members of the agency and provision of fire arms, the federal government has not been attending to the NDLEA’s basic needs that would aid them in efficiently and effectively carrying out their duties. He said that the management of such law enforcement agency as his should be the sole responsibility of the federal government but that due to neglect,
the state government has been supporting them in providing such things as the rent, furniture and vehicles for their operation. The commandant, in the same vein, appreciated the state governor, Chief Dr Willie Obiano for always being there for them because they would have been a laughing stock without his intervention. He revealed that it is such lackadaisical attitude of the federal government towards law enforcement agencies by the federal government that informs the corruption existing in law enforcement agencies.
Commander Sule asserted that, notwithstanding the odds, he has been able to keep the agency, which he remains solely loyal to, on in carrying out its duties in Anambra state. He revealed that he was instrumental to the rehabilitation of the Onitsha NDLEA office, ensuring that awareness programs are running on the electronic media and establishing drug-free clubs in secondary schools. He frowned at how some school authorities have not been cooperating with his agency which, he said, is why the drug-free club has not been set up in every single secondary school in the state.
Speaking on the operation of the rehabilitation centre for drug addicts, Commander Momodu Sule revealed that the centre is very functional and that every junkie apprehended is rehabilitated before being released. He, however regretted the rehabilitation centre is not yet equipped with the right human and physical resources to attend to those drug addicts that are sickle cell patients. He shared that with better resources, he is sure his agency shall be able to wipe out drug peddlers from the state. Drug peddlers operating in Obosi area, who are posing social menace, are our greatest headache, Momodu lamented.
Advising online publishers, Commandant Momodu Sule enjoined them to be more critical in their reporting and stop being pawns in the hands of bloated politicians who would rather distract the populace with such insignificant issues as tribalism, religious diversity and zoning. Zoning, Momodu revealed, is neither constitutional nor recognized by federal character. He told the online publishers that they should be more focused and start addressing the right issues which will awake the general Nigerian’s populace’ consciousness to the real problems of the country and how to resolve them. He said there is a lot to do in the country and that people should stop talking about unemployment as it is the mantra of the lazy. Momodu Sule shared how he has remained resourceful, proactive and creative as a writer and publisher and that this is why he has maintained his incorrigibility and dignity. He advised others in the civil service to borrow a leaf from him and be resourceful as this will protect them from the lure of corruption.
