Chief, Hon. Sylva Nwobu Alor |
In the light of the
sensitization campaign launched by the Association of People Living with sickle
cell disorder, an elder-statesman and major stakeholder in Anambra politics,
Chief, Hon. Sylva Nwobu Alor has pledged his 100% support to the cause of
eradicating the Sickle Cell Anemia scourge as well as easing the plight of the
Sickle Cell patients in the state. Chief Nwobu Alor, the executive chairman of
Crownbank Corporation Limited followed up on his pledge to commence
facilitating the programme of the association coordinated by the fire-brand Aisha
Edward. The high chief, who happened to be a legislator in the old Anambra
state, decried the nonchalant attitude of members of the society towards the scourge
of Sickle Cell Anemia disease condition, and described the attitude as callous
and inhuman.
Chief Nwobu Alor told
ostareze.com that he attributes the lingering of the Sickle cell scourge in the
country to the high level of corruption that has eaten deep into every facet of
the system. He bemoaned what he termed ‘the height of wickedness’ displayed by
some Non-Governmental Organizations that pose as aid givers to Sickle cell
patients to rip off well-to-do well, meaning Nigerians for their own selfish
ends, while the Sickle cell sufferers remain guinea pigs in the hands of greedy health practitioners. He expressed his
disillusionment for NGOs and said that he completely endorsed the Association
of People Living with Sickle cell Disorder because it is ‘he that wears the
shoes that knows where it pinches him.’ Hon. Sylva Nwobu Alor congratulated the
effort of Aisha Edward and her association for going against the odds of the
severity of their conditions to come out by themselves to say ‘enough is enough’
and re-sensitize the society on the need to stamp out Sickle cell Anemia once
and for as well as help them in pathetic issues they are facing.
Honourable Nwobu Alor
in the same vein gave thumbs up to the Anambra state government for taking the
lead in making a Sickle Cell eradication Law and called on other states of the
federation to borrow a leaf from Anambra Legislators. He however solicited for
the law to be enforced by the Obiano administration as it will leave a very lasting
legacy in the state if his administration is able to plug all those holes
through which Sickle cell anemia still befall the state. He also prayed the
government aided the NDLEA in providing the necessary wherewithal to combat the
drug addiction problem that has befallen Sickle cell patients lately.
He therefore called on
all well meaning Anambrarians to respond to the clarion call for supporting the
association in their public awareness campaigns and said it is timely and would
be a good follow-up on the recent applaudable eradication programmes successfully
held recently on health related issues like Ebola and bird flu.
